Dr. Alice Hamilton joins the faculty at Harvard Medical School.

The first woman faculty member at Harvard Medical School, she is a graduate of the University of Michigan and former professor at Northwestern University Medical School. Hamilton is a pioneer in the field of industrial medicine who identifies the health effects of lead on workers. Harvard president Lawrence Lowell agrees to appoint Hamilton only after she agrees to never walk in the academic procession, enter the Harvard Club, or ask for her allotment of Harvard-Yale football game tickets.
